This compelling May 2012 capture from Canal Park showcases one of Minnesota's most celebrated waterfront landmarks in action, as a vessel glides through the raised steel structure that serves as the gateway between Lake Superior and Duluth Harbor.
Standing sentinel over the Duluth Ship Canal, the Aerial Lift Bridge has been a beacon for mariners and photographers alike since its completion in 1905. This historic landmark, originally designed as a transporter bridge and converted to its current lift configuration in 1929-1930, rises majestically to allow passage for the steady stream of ore carriers, freighters, and recreational vessels that navigate these waters. The bridge's distinctive architectural profile, with its dual towers and massive counterweight system, creates a dramatic frame for passing ships while symbolizing Duluth's end...
